Minimalist Apartments

If a hipster were to temporarily lose her mind and agree to appear on a reality show (perhaps amidst a particularly acute coke and salvia jag), and that show was the epic (and still running, apparently) series Room Raiders, said raider would need all of .4 seconds to tell the hipster chick’s apartment from the Trixies’ lairs. Even if he were blindfolded. And also on salvia. And .3 heartbeats per minute away from legally dead.

That’s right, dear readers, the interior decoration of a hipster apartment (that of the female, in particular) has an extremely distinct scheme: there be shit err’ywhere. To illustrate, let’s review two side-by-side comparisons:

Wall Coverings

Trixie: Cream-colored walls with few embellishments, save an oversize canvas emblazoned with red poppies hanging over the dark brown Jennifer Convertibles sectional sofa.

Hipster: Creepy-white walls with various smudges and dings from former tenants. One orange accent wall that Jimbo and Frenzy did that one Tuesday night after they yoinked Sheila’s speed. Various paintings, nude sketches, scrawled guitar tablature, concert art, Polaroids and antique doilies span the surface. 

Kitchen Area

Trixie: A few wine bottles in a wine rack. Cooking utensils in a large canister next to the stove. A clean granite countertop. Fridge door clear but for a few carefully selected party snaps.

Hipster: Secondhand chandelier from the ’70s precariously hung from a hook on the ceiling. Various and sundry books, fashion accessories, cat toys and McDonald’s Happy Meal figurines, as well as a large blue typewriter and what appears to be a twine-weaving loom litter the counter, floor and nearby horizontal surfaces. The fridge door is an intricate mixed media collage.

And that is why an episode of Room Raiders shot in a hipster’s apartment would be indistinguishable from an installment of A&E’s Hoarders. (NB: While this pattern holds true for many hipster boys [when compared with bros—see bachelor pads], plenty of hipster boys shun societal standards by instead sinking into minimalist extremes, crouching under dingy lights in nearly empty rooms like subdued murderers in 1950s Alcatraz.)
